Ken first learned about Harvest Gardens’ training through Jack, who hosts one of our most successful projects. Jack not only introduced us to Ken but also joined us during the training session at Ken’s location. Jack has since gained fame on YouTube for his nutritious smoothies, which he prepares and shares with clients and friends at market days and various events.
After the initial training with Harvest Gardens, Ken started with 14 double-dug beds on his farm. Today, he has expanded to an impressive 230 double-dug beds, and he plans to add another 30 beds to his kitchen garden next month. This expansion will bring the total to 260 beds, covering his entire one-and-a-half-acre farm with double-dug beds.
Ken’s farm is dedicated to organic farming, where he cultivates a diverse range of crops. He grows staple crops such as maize, beans, sweet potatoes, cassava, red grams, groundnuts, and others. The farm also boasts a variety of fruits, including gooseberries, bananas, and pineapples. Vegetables like black nightshade, kale, spinach, cowpeas, and pumpkin leaves, among many other greens, are also cultivated.
In addition to these, Ken has planted several medicinal herbs, including lemongrass, basil, mint, Artemisia, Moringa, aloe vera, coriander, and bush basil. The farm also features a well-maintained fish pond, which serves both for domestic use and as a source of nutrient-rich water for irrigation. Moreover, Ken has established an apiary with several beehives, which not only aids in pollination but also produces honey.
Ken practices vermiculture and vermicomposting, using worms to create high-quality foliar feed and manure for his crops. His dedication to organic farming is evident in his continuous research and efforts to enhance his knowledge in this field.
